Final Fantasy VII Remake has been the most anticipated Final Fantasy related project entering E3 this year, with us finally getting more information and the release date. What we certainly weren’t seeing coming though was the return of its original followup in Final Fantasy VIII, but Square Enix surprised us all with the reveal of Final Fantasy VIII Remaster.
While not a full remake like Final Fantasy VII, getting Final Fantasy VIII Remastered is a major deal for fans of this underrated PlayStation classic. In recent years, we’ve gotten ports for Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy IX from that generation on multiple platforms that were based on the PC releases from the past.
There was talk that something had happened with the source code on Final Fantasy VIII, so it makes sense that we’d get more of a remaster than a flat out port with the PC enhancements. The game obviously is not remade from the ground up though, so you cannot expect the visual level of Final Fantasy VII Remake.
With all the recent Final Fantasy re-releases, it’s great to see Final Fantasy VIII finally joining in on the party. With all the changes the series has seen in recent entries, this would be a good time for people to try out what was one of the most different at the time and perhaps it will reach a whole new audience that missed out on the game in the past.
Final Fantasy VIII Remastered will release sometime in 2019 for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
