It appears that even the thought of Kurai’s mother, when thinking about Nagisa’s mother, is enough to trigger her, causing the young veteran actress to stop in her tracks. This is entirely speculation at this point, but it appears the scene is hitting too close to home. Tenmaku is not worried about this, however, and sees it as an opportunity for Hajime to improvise the scene and take true ownership of the script and his film. Ice-Head Gill has been quick to introduce us to its conflicts and the protagonist’s quest in under 10 chapters already. The Elusive Samurai continues its trend of positive developments for Tokiyuki’s survival. Significant battles are won, alliances are forged, and the Ashikaga forces feel their losses growing. This isn’t to say the tables have completely turned, as the villains begin to set new plans in motion, devising a ruthless strategy. Loid, however, was in danger of Yuri who burst into their home and checked his arm for a gun wound he inflicted, as he saw him wince in pain. This was the closest yet to Yuri finding out Loid’s double life, but thankfully, he covered his (still-bleeding) wound in prosthetics.

The arc concludes here, but valuable intelligence will be extracted from Winston as the next developments begin for Operation Strix.

Spy x Family is an exciting recent Shonen Jump manga from the last several years, and people are excited to see where the series will go next. Spy x Family does not run in Weekly Shonen Jump, but rather through Shonen Jump+, and has been its most successful manga since its release date in 2019. Spy x Family releases on a bi-weekly schedule, releasing one manga chapter every other Sunday, with chapter 74 being 2023’s first new release on January 22, 2023.

Mask De Masculine was easily the most flamboyant, silly Quincy member of the Stern Ritters yet. The masked wrestler, and answer to the question “What if you made Incineroar a humanoid?” provides some stiff competition for defenders of the Seireitei but as expected, Renji Abarai’s appearance cuts this domination short. Even though Masculine has his deadly strength, killer moves, and a healing factor supplied by a disturbingly resilient fan, James, he finds himself pinned by the end.

The ensuing battle is extremely one-sided, with Renji unleashing his incredible snake-themed Bankai. The ability, So-Oh Zabimaru, unleashes a fatal finisher called Zaga Teppo that clamps down on the brawler with fiery snake fans, reducing him to crumbling ash.

However, the post-credits scene suggests this might still not be enough. James dies when Mask dies, his soul being absorbed into Yhwach before the Quincy king disappears, asleep. He will be back with a vengeance, but his sleep must not be disturbed.

Akane-banashi is a charming success story as an ongoing Shonen Jump manga. It’s got enthralling storytelling, and a fantastic protagonist, and remains sure-footed in its delivery each week in retaining enthusiastic interest from the readers. Like a Butterfly has been around in Japan for over a decade, originally known as Hibi Chōchō. It’s a romance/slice-of-life manga about a beautiful, shy young high school girl named Suiren Shibazeki who eventually falls for the school’s karate champion, Taichi Kawasumi. The story follows their bond as it develops over their years in high school in a fairly innocent tale highlighted by subtly elegant artwork and charming characterization. What is a Slice of Life Manga?

The genre “slice of life” is a common one in anime and manga, typically focusing on grounded, realistic storytelling surrounding normal life. There’s also a strong romantic connotation to many slice-of-life stories, with Like a Butterfly being no exception. Many, if not all interactions in this series play into Suiren and Taichi’s romantic feelings for one another as they develop, although Vol. 1 is a modest showing of these sentiments.

A Predictable, Simple Premise

High school teens falling for one another is no anomaly in the world of manga. It’s incredibly common, and in fact, it accounts for many of the most popular current series today. It’s a predictable, simple premise, but Like a Butterfly makes up for it with its particular strengths.

Suiren and Taichi are both shy, with Suiren regarded by the school’s boys as an unattainable goddess, while Taichi is an accomplished athlete whose shyness causes him to avoid eye contact. This avoidance mystifies Suiren and sets their connection in motion for Like a Butterfly Vol. 1.

While their developments are somewhat sparse in this series, their decisions and behavior make sense given their situations. When they’re forced to interact, it evokes the best type of frustration in the reader, seeing two awkward teens who don’t understand their feelings for one another. It feels organic, and while it’s indeed predictable, another way to describe that is safe, it’s comfort food, and it’s all too relatable. Upon review, what Like a Butterfly Vol. 1 did to set itself apart was largely in its presentation.

Elegant, Expressive Characters

While Suiren and Taichi are the main characters Like a Butterfly features several supporting casts including Aya and Ryōsuke and more. But when reading this series, all eyes are on the former two, and it’s hard to see why not: the author duo Suu Morishita, with particular credit to the artist Nachiyan, does a great job rendering their most notable characteristics.

Suiren has an ethereal, effortlessly graceful beauty, while Taichi’s apparent aloofness conceals just how much he reads into his interactions with Suiren. This manifests in moments such as their beach volleyball match in Chapter 5, and when their gazes first meet in Chapter 1. The tension is palpable, albeit as frustrating as two teens out of touch with their feelings can be. A lot of the panels can devolve into sideways glances and blushing faces, but there’s an earnest sweetness to it that’s fairly convincing.

The Verdict

Speaking of earnestness, Suu Morishita’s incredibly sweet little notes throughout the chapters such as at the start of Chapter 7 thanking the readers. It turns out this was the duo’s first manga, and it’s frankly wonderful to see such a visually gorgeous first manga make it to the West, even if other projects of theirs came here first.

While Like a Butterfly Vol. 1 doesn’t offer much in terms of substantive plot, it doesn’t set out to, either. It instead offers up charming, well-drawn characters, believable situations, and an approachable premise to which many readers can relate. If you choose to read this series more, you will be delighted to see the characters grow up in real-time along its 12-volume run.

The series revolves around Akane Osaki, an earnest, sweet, talented, and ambitious teen girl who idolizes her father. Her father, Shinta Arakawa, was a gifted, yet underappreciated practitioner of Rakugo whose ambitions go unrewarded as he fades from the industry in favor of a traditional 9-5. What is Rakugo?

The art of Rakugo (performative storytelling) in and of itself could get entire articles discussing it. In Akane-banashi, Akane’s father wished to be shin’uchi, a top-ranked Rakugoka (Rakugo performer) before being ultimately expelled as a middling, underpaid futatsume (middle rank, above zenza). Akane sets out as a young performer to redeem the image of her father by using the craft she eagerly studied as he practiced.

An Earnest, Grounded Shonen Protagonist

So many protagonists from Shonen Jump are far too close to perfect for their own good. Whether it’s overpowered characters with plot armor like Son Goku, or impossibly proficient spies like Spy x Family’s Twilight, it’s good to have characters like Akane. Akane is possibly my favorite Shueisha-published main character in years, an earnest, grounded Shonen protagonist.

Akane’s journey and development as a character take priority over spectacle, all while her ambitions involve becoming a top-rated deliverer of spectacles.

Akane is talented and adores her father’s techniques, using them in her routines, yet it’s pointed out that she needs more than simple technique and charisma to win over her audiences. Upon review of her techniques and growth in Akane-banashi Vol. 1, she learns about how Rakugo is also an act of service. It is meant to make the lives of others better by understanding what they want and giving it to them.

It’s in this gradual acceptance of her limitations, while rising to the challenge, that we as readers can identify with and root for Akane. She’s likable yet has room to grow, which is more compelling than your uncomplicated, overtly perfect protagonists (although there’s nothing wrong with an occasional Mary Sue.)

Expressive, Evocative Art

Akane-banashi may nail storytelling both conceptually and in practice, but you can’t overlook its wonderful art. It might not be as intensely detailed as other contemporary series, but its greatest strengths are in creating emotive, unique characters.

Each Rakugoka embodies their personas with intensely differing facial expressions, often with comedic results. Character interactions are strong and dynamic. Finally, one of the most interesting visual moments in Volume 1 was when Akane made a breakthrough while serving at a restaurant to study how to make her audience happy.

This is tested when she meets a foreign, monolingual patron, and breaks the language barrier by figuring out what he wants through intuition and empathy. To see her succeed, and her beaming face after receiving accolades for her work is heartwarming to see in real-time and would make for a wonderful anime moment.

The Verdict

Akane-banashi is one of the best Shonen manga in recent years, forgoing action and spectacle for character-focused storytelling. It’s wonderfully drawn, even if not mind-blowingly gorgeous, and has one of the most likable, relatable protagonists around. Akane is a young girl who adores her father and resents his humiliation while honoring him by taking up his craft.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this series has a similarly lasting cultural impact to that of Hikaru no Go. Regardless of its place on the manga cultural zeitgeist, it’s also an ongoing story, one which you can check out either physically or digitally through VIZ Media and Manga Plus!

In Chapter 227, Shoei Barou dribbles the ball toward Bastard Munchen’s goal while reflecting on his past. He admitted his intention to end his partnership with Snuffy. Shoei had mastered Snuffy’s techniques and Predator Eyes, making the master striker’s tactics useless. Consequently, he waited for the perfect moment to quit. The chapter then returns to the present.

The Ubers were initially bewildered by Barou’s actions, but they quickly rallied behind him upon witnessing his confidence. In doing so, Barou could take control of the entire Ubers team. Although Noa believed that Snuffy would be displeased, the opposite was true, as he was pretty pleased with the outcome.

During a conversation with Snuffy, Barou expressed his belief that his team was elite and provided the best environment for average players. However, for someone like Barou, who aspired to be the best, the environment was not challenging enough. As a result, Barou planned to dismantle Snuffy’s team to defeat Yoichi Isagi.

As Isagi watched Barou, he felt envious of him because he also desired to control the game his way. This filled him with anger, and he was determined to prevent Barou from succeeding. While Asta seemed happy to see Finral, Shogun Ryuya Ryudo had something more important to ask him. Ryuya knew one more person could join Asta and go to the Clover Kingdom. Hence he suggested Finral take Ichika with them. Ichika initially rejected this idea as she believed that her place was with Ryuya. That’s when Yosuga Mushogatake assured Ichika that he would protect the Shogun and the Hino Country. Ryuya added to this and told Ichika to go to the Clover Kingdom and reunite with her older brother Yami Sukehiro.

Chapter 366 returns to the present time with Asta arriving at the Clover Kingdom. He was left angry upon seeing his Magic Knight squad mates beaten and in such a sorry state. That’s when Damnatio tried to intimidate him. However, Asta felt confident in himself when he asked Finral to focus on medical treatment while taking on the Paladin alone.

Asta whipped out his Demon Slasher Katana, walking toward Damnatio to fight him. He was confident that he would win and was left unfazed by Damnatio’s threats. Damnatio used his Air Magic to pass judgment on Asta. However, Asta canceled it out using his Anti-Magic. Damnatio was left surprised by this as Finral could understand that Asta had become more adept at using Anti-Magic.

The car then turns into an armor that covers his entire body except for his mouth. After all, the people who smile are always the strongest. The armor is called “Armored All Might” and it replicates his hero costume, including the “antennae” hairs and the cape.

All Might asks Hercules, his car, to start recording the fight, and it says it’s already started. AM then starts talking to Tsukauchi. La Brava sees an opportunity to get some views and wants to start a new stream immediately, but the cops are against it.

La Brava says “Start! Stream!” is a very dramatic way and the cops say “stop pretending you’re using your Bankai or something!!!”

Tsukauchi remembers the moment All Might left the command room, saying he would join the fight, and wonders if he has chose where he’ll die. After all, it’s impossible for someone without a quirk to face against AFO, no matter how many support items he has.

Tsukauchi tells La Brava to stop the stream, because what’s about to happen is a former hero getting brutally killed to buy a few minutes, or maybe just a few seconds, for his student. Cut to AFO, who knows full well that wasting his time here is pointless, but…

Seeing the smile on All Might’s face makes him lose control and go for it. All Might starts running and shouts “Hercules! Red!” and what was left of the car forms a shield around him, protecting him from AFO’s electric beam that destroyed some buildings arround them.

Hercules’ voice warns him that 66% of the shield has been destroyed and that it won’t be able to protect him from another attack, but All Might continues to smile. The electric beam destroyed AFO’s own arm, but it’s already healing.

He tells All Might that this way of fighting, in which he moves forward without dodging, was only possible because he had One for All. But as soon as he tries to attack again, wires come out of the armor’s arms. All Might shouts “Black Whip!!

My Hero Academia Chapter 395, “What Lies Beyond My Happiness,” begins with all the clones vanishing. They are heading toward the Todoroki family, Iida, and Hawks. One clone pointed his knife at Hawks, but it vanished, and Hawks says, “Bubaigawa was a nice guy, right, Himiko Toga?” A narration from Toga then begins, saying that her knife allows her to become who she loves, so she shouldn’t have held it with hate in her heart.

We see Toga standing next to Ochako, lying on the ground. She has her mask thing in her hand. Toga is panting and starts to feel a lot of pain from using her quirk. She realizes that Ochako is so exhausted because she didn’t release her awakened quirk until all the heroes were back on the ground. She didn’t want to hurt anyone Ochako knows she has lost a lot of blood and cannot move a finger. Toga looks around her and sees all the people who got hurt because of her, and, at the same time, she remembers Ochako’s sweet words.

Ochako replies that she’s the weird one for doing this transfusion, but Toga says she will always live how she wants to. That’s why she won’t let herself be arrested, even if it’s on Ochako’s terms. Toga apologizes for the stabbing and yelling at her. She says that Toya burned down the house that forced her to be expected, making her happy. But even though the house was gone, the wounds in her heart weren’t. And Ochako recognized that Toga’s pain was real. Even though it wasn’t the most straightforward way, Ochako touched Toga’s heart, making her feel lighter inside. “Thank you so much, Ochako-chan. I was so, so happy.”

The blood continues to be transferred, Ochako starts to cry, shouting, “Himiko-chan!” and Toga smiles. Toga’s narration continues, with her saying that she drank people’s blood with a mix of love and envy. But if she had been loved earlier, she could have also given her blood to many people. And if that happened, the world would be a slightly more accessible place to live in. We see an image of Toga letting a little bird fly and looking up at the sky as she smiles. “But still, I am Himiko Toga. I lived how I wanted to and was a normal girl with the cutest smile in the world!”. At the end of the chapter, we see the two lying together on the ground.

What Are the Best Fights in Record of Ragnarok Season 2?

In its sophomore season, we see Record of Ragnarok improve its animation, with this improvement showing more strongly for certain fights. The kills are brutal just like in the first, but now it’s far more conflicting to see some characters lose, as they win the hearts of their viewers. In Season 2’s lineup, we see former champions of mankind among the gods, and deities swapping sides for the sake of humanity’s survival, with the following featured in Season 2:

• Round 1: Hercules vs. Jack the Ripper
• Round 2: Shiva vs. Raiden Tameemon
• Round 3: Zerofuku/Hajun vs. Buddha

This time the Greek presence isn’t quite as plentiful, with Hercules being their lone representative. Meanwhile, we get a classic Hindu deity with Shiva, and Zerofuku is a rare exception, a fictional entity incorporating pre-existing Japanese fortune gods into himself.

Meanwhile, the human fighters, or Einherjar, get the notorious serial killer, Jack the Ripper; the greatest sumo wrestler and the strongest muscles in history, Raiden Tameemon; and Buddha, who turns on the gods, wishing to give humanity a fighting chance.

The characters on each side are varied in their motivations, sympathetic appeal to the viewer and combat tactics. But I’ll preface with this: Season 2 didn’t have a bad fight, simply some more excellent than others.

3. Shiva vs. Raiden Tameemon

This fight featured a controversial depiction of the Hindu deity Shiva resulting in it being banned in India. That hasn’t stopped the fight from being one for the books. While Shiva’s awesome might doesn’t indeed debut until later in the battle, his fiery showcase against Raiden is one to remember.

In one corner, you have the greatest brawler in heaven. In the other corner, you have a man whose muscles grow so uncontrollably strong, they threaten to kill him but can dismember the gods when kept in check.

As far as spectacle goes, this fight is an interesting one. Raiden doesn’t technically have a weapon for his Volundr, even if the Valkyrie Thrud is a perfect match for him. Instead, his Volundr is a mawashi allowing him to control his muscles from crushing him. In this fight, the spectacle is seeing how these muscles grow, warp, and become deadly weapons, making Raiden into a quasi-shapeshifter as he fights the God of Destruction.

Shiva, meanwhile, gets his ass kicked for a lot of the fight, but once he unleashes the awesome Tandava Karma, the fight draws rapidly to a dramatic conclusion. Both characters’ backstories were rather interesting, and the prospect of Raiden’s natural strength being enough to tackle a supreme god is dope. Shiva calls it the best fight ever, and while it may be great, it’s not even the best fight of Record of Ragnarok Season 2.

2. Hercules vs. Jack the Ripper

I knew this one would be exciting just because of how well it was written in the manga. Jack the Ripper was the first truly unsympathetic Einherjar for humanity, while Hercules is one of the most iconic mythological heroes ever.

Jack is history’s most infamous serial killer, able to directly see the emotions of others, emitted as different colors, with macabre undertones for when their emotions are dark or fearful. Hercules is a former human who retains his love for humanity, while having drank ambrosia, transforming him into the demigod he is.

The biggest strength this fight had going for it was the writing and characterization of Jack, showcasing his tactical intellect, combined with Hercules’ Twelve Labors-related abilities. Each twist and turn was wonderfully accented with the recreation of 19th-Century London, where the fight felt like a far cry from the disappointing silliness such as Season 1’s worst fight.

The only drawback is in the occasionally lazy-looking animation, as Hercules would lifelessly bat away projectiles. But this is minor enough to only prevent it from cinching the top spot, and it’s still an excellent fight. Viewers will have a hard time choosing somebody to root for, but they’ll spend all of it on the edge of their seats, with Jack’s deceptions deserving extra recognition.

1. Zerofuku vs. Buddha

Okay, so technically this one has multiple characters appearing in the gods’ slot as multiple transformations happen. I loved this one for the backstory and enormously entertaining twist: it’s technically 2 gods, squaring off in Round 6. This fight was so epic it got a separate release as Record of Ragnarok Season 2 Part 2, and it’s hard to see why not: the fight is amazing.

Zerofuku is the most important of the characters who fought for the gods, a conflicted deity who wished only to absorb the misfortune of others and take it upon himself. His resentment twisted him, making him into a vengeful, angry fighter. Buddha, however, was a radical presence that interacted with Zerofuku in the past, winning humans over effortlessly.

In terms of combat, it was also an interesting spectacle. Visually, Zerofuku and the later form Hajun’s attacks are among the most insane ones in the series, including massive strikes capable of crushing everything in the stadium at once. Buddha’s Six Realms Staff, meanwhile, responds to his emotions, resulting in a weapon that’s flexible and alternates drastically in its uses. It’s an unpredictable tool, but Buddha is already a wildcard, so it winds up fitting and is thrilling to see them manifest as a giant shield when he fears for his life or a mighty golden shortsword to trade blows or even a deadly scythe.

But the part that makes this fight truly great is in the final moments. For fans who were paying attention to the other fights, Buddha didn’t go in with a Volundr, being a god who was already capable of fighting other gods. But this gets addressed spectacularly, resulting in a far more dramatic finish I won’t choose to spoil unless you want to find out here. The fight is close, Buddha is an exciting and fun character to watch in action, and it’s a clear winner for best fight in the season.

Record of Ragnarok Season 2 brought many fights on the level of Kojiro vs. Poseidon from Season 1, and we can only hope that Season 3 brings the heat similarly. • Suddenly, a colossal earthquake starts. It’s taking place six days after Lulusia Kingdom’s destruction. There is a massive hole in the middle of the sea, at the place that was once Lulusia Kingdom (just like the hole beneath Enies Lobby).
• We then cut to people all over the world feeling the earthquake. We can see:
  • -Momonosuke in “Wanokuni”
  • -Uholisia in “Kanokuni”
  • -Iceberg in “Water Seven”
  • -Hina in “Marine HQ”
  • -Imu in “Mary Geoise” (he says “…”)
  • -Laboon in “Twin Cape”
  • -Some prisoners in “Impel Down”

  • -Ivankov in “kamabakka Queendom”
• We can see other random islands too. The sea around the world rises by 1 meter, sinking many islands.
• Then back to Foosha Village, where villagers are looking at rising tides. Woop Slap is looking super worried.
• Cut to Egghead Island, where Marine battleships are surrounding the island. Kizaru destroys one of Vegapunk’s “Sea Beast Weapon” with a normal beam. However, Kizaru has not started the attack yet since he doesn’t want to cause too much damage to the island.
• Kizaru calls Sentoumaru and asks him to surrender, but Sentoumaru refuses. We see a little flashback panel of young Kizaru demonstrating his beam (a young Vegapunk and child Sentoumaru (Kizaru is sitting on the ground while he’s shooting beams with his finger in the air).
• Sentoumaru continues talking.
• Sentoumaru: “Uncle Punk developed Pacifista’s laser by researching your power. I can’t believe you are the one coming to kill him!”
• Kizaru: “Unfortunately, I can’t cover you from the “researching the Void Century charges, Sentoumaru-kun. In the end, I have to obey orders…”
• There are 100 Marine battleships with 9 Vice Admirals and 30,000 marine soldiers surrounding Egghead Island (Saint Saturna and Kizaru). Doberman and Doll are part of the Vice Admirals, but there are new characters, too (we saw some of them in Chapter 1078).
• Saint Saturn is having a meal inside his room. Vice Admiral Doberman enters and reports the overall situation. We can see a recap of Egghead Island and where all the characters are (with chibi characters). Saturn also orders Doberman to sink the researchers’ ship that escaped the island earlier.
• Cut to Egghead Island. York is calling Mary Geoise, complaining about why they tried to kill her and other Vegapunk. The Gorusei replies that they saw her as no different from other Vegapunk. However, after Lulusia’s incident, they have a new idea and might keep York to help them produce more “Mother Flame” weapons.
• It’s revealed that York is the one that sent “Mother Flame” to Gorousei. The power plant for producing them is on Egghead Island too. York made the Gorusei promise not to hurt her or the research laboratory and to make her a Tenryuubito. The Gorousei agrees (we see Saturn and Kizaru are also listening to the conversation).
• However, in the final double spread of the chapter, we can see that York is making the call to tears with Zoro’s sword at her neck. Usopp is the one setting up the Den Den Mushi. York ends the conversation screaming for help.
• York: “Save me from Luffy!”
• The Gorousei, Saturn, and Kizaru are shocked since, until then, they were under the impression that York managed to defeat everyone using the Seraphim before calling them to Mary Geoise.
• We can see that the rest of the Straw Hat Pirates: Bonney, Lucci, and real Vegapunk (that already packed his bag), are eating and chilling behind YOrk, Zoro, and Usopp.
• Nami: “I get the entire situation now.”

After that, the Narrator says that Garp’s fate is unknown as he disappeared at Hachinosu Island. In addition, Luffy claims Egghead Island as his stronghold, but we see the Marines have also arrived.

The title of Chainsaw Man Chapter 137 is a tribute to the song “ChuChu Lovely MuniMuni MuraMura PrinPrin Boron Nururu ReroRero” by Maximum the Hormone, a heavy metal band from Hachioji, Tokyo, Japan. The band’s songs “What’s Up, People?!” and “Zetsubo Billy” were used as the second opening and ending themes of the anime series Death Note. Furthermore, their song “Akagi” was the ending theme for the anime series Akagi.

“ChuChu Lovely MuniMuni MuraMura PrinPrin Boron Nururu ReroRero” was released in 2007, and fans quickly pointed out that Chainsaw Man takes place in the 1990s. His choice of the song could serve as an extra warning for us about this new girl, or it could be foreshadowing, due to the unfortunate content of the song, that she is going to be the final boss. An excellent view, and while the second season is not as high quality as the first, only the First Season is available to view here, anyway.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – English Dub

If you love anime with striking visuals, Demon Slayer is the series you must check out immediately. Chainsaw Man

An instant fan favorite and a uniquely entertaining submission from MAPPA, the Shonen Dark Trio got their second anime with Chainsaw Man. It’s got some strong animation, a love for pop culture references, and each episode got a unique ending theme (Episode 5 in particular got a banger.) Chainsaw Man features a world ravaged by devils representing the populace’s fear of any given object or creature, with tomatoes ranking lower, and guns/chainsaws closer to the top. The more potent the fear, the more dangerous the devil becomes. The characters of this series are wildly varied, fascinating, and equally engaging instead of solely focusing on the protagonist. That being said, Denji rocks, even if he’s a morally nuanced character with less-than-noble intentions at times.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury

Ahh Gundam, you deserved to make this list, and the most recent iteration of the iconic franchise was a true return to form. The Witch From Mercury is the best Gundam in recent memory, boasting movie-quality animation and some crazy combat moments, along with some pretty shocking twists. The series was always far more than its basic surface appeal of giant battling robot suits, with this show discussing the grim implications of child soldiers in war while still maintaining a plucky spirit.

With all of the high-quality content available, there is more than enough to keep any anime fan excited for what’s coming next on Crunchyroll. One Piece Chapter 1089 Spoilers

So far there have only been two sentences leaked for One Piece Chapter 1089, but those two sentences have some pretty big implications and fans are super excited to see what they actually mean.

• We get people reacting to the news about garp in the newspaper.
• There’s news about disasters occurring around the world.
• We get stuff about the disappearance of Lulusia Kingdom. There’s a giant hole where Lulusia Kingdom used to be. The sea levels around it are elevated.
• We return to Egghead Island and a lot of Vice Admirals are coming with Kizaru and Saturn. There’s a discussion about how to block all exists from Egghead Island.
• There’s a small flashback with Vegapunk, Sentomaru, and Kizaru.
• At the end of the chapter, work calls the Gorosei and says “Save me from Luffy,” and we see a double page spread of the Straw Hat Pirates.

To try and understand these leaks, we must talk about precisely what happened with the Lulusia Kingdom and how it can relate to another island we saw previously in the series, Enies Lobby. Even if we don’t get to see Kizaru and Luffy fight at Egghead Island, we will most likely get to learn the lore of how the hole beneath Enies Lobby was made based on the aftermath of Lulusia Kingdom and if the two are indeed related, like many are thinking. This may be exciting news for One Piece lore lovers who have wanted answers for this topic but had given up on ever getting them.

What is Enies Lobby in One Piece?

The description in the rumors for One Piece Chapter 1089 has brought speculation from fans that this is how the hole beneath Enies Lobby was created. Enies Lobby, also known as the Judicial Island, served as a stronghold controlled by the government in Paradise. The island was called the “afternoon island” and the “never-night island.” It was one of the three significant strongholds of the World Government, and it served as the main headquarters of CP9.

Fans are now speculating that a weapon similar to what was used at the Lulusia Kingdom is the same one that caused the hole below Enies Lobby. This weapon, the Mother Flame, was created by Vegapunk (more on this below). These rumors also bring up old fan theories that Enies Lobby is where God Valley used to be and that the World Government used its power to cover it up and create Enies Lobby in its place. Enies Lobby appears during One Piece Chapter 358 and Episode 263 if you are looking to brush up on your Enies Lobby appearances before we get the rest of the lore that appears to be incoming.

What is the Mother Flame in One Piece?

A weapon known as the Mother Flame can instantly destroy entire islands by firing a barrage of lasers at its target. The destruction it causes is so vast that no evidence remains of the target. It is one of the most potent abilities ever witnessed, and only one other ability, the Goro Goro no Mi, has been shown to possess such destructive power. This immense power has led some to speculate that it may be one of the Ancient Weapons, especially if Imu is one of the First Twenty, as hypothesized.

In One Piece Chapter 1060, the Mother Flame weapon was used for the first time. After the Levely, Imu instructed the Five Elders to test the Mother Flame on the island where the Lulusia Kingdom was located. The Five Elders agreed, and Topman Warcury mentioned that the test results could impact their approach to dealing with Vegapunk and Egghead. The Mother Flame was sent to the Lulusia Kingdom and destroyed in seconds, erasing evidence of the island’s existence.

We will revisit the Lulusia Kingdom in One Piece Chapter 1089, which is exciting because we haven’t seen the aftermath for ourselves. Instead, the World Government told everyone that the kingdom doesn’t exist anymore, and it was assumed the residents all died. However, you have to remember that Vegapunk said he wouldn’t create a weapon like this, so is it possible the Kingdom may have just been transported somewhere instead of being destroyed? We will soon find out if any or all of these theories are correct once One Piece Chapter 1089 is released.

Jujutsu Kaisen is the flavor of the month, and perhaps the entire Summer 2023 season with its current anime adaptation. Season 2 has been a spectacular showcase of production value, quality animation, and intimate character development for several of its core cast. But for the anime-only folks who don’t venture beyond what’s broadcast in episodic format, they might have one key question. How does Jujutsu Kaisen 0 factor in, and do you need to watch it before Season 2?

Should You Watch the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Movie Before JJK Season 2?

While you can get away with not having watched it before Season 1, you must watch Jujutsu Kaisen 0 before Season 2 Episode 8 of the anime. Ideally, you should watch it before starting the season or no later than after Episode 5, though. It fits chronologically with the storytelling (after Hidden Inventory, before Shibuya Incident) and will make the most sense to watch it before then.

But another case for watching it is that JJK 0 is just plain good. It’s got that signature MAPPA excellence in its finished product, it’s astoundingly well-animated and wisely focuses on fun supporting characters. The story focuses on Yuta Okkotsu with a heartfelt, tragic love story and an interesting perspective on curses in the series. JJK 0 also has highlights including Toge Inumaki and Suguru Geto after the events of the Hidden Inventory Arc.

Where Does Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Fall In the JJK Timeline?

To simplify events and distill them in terms of anime arcs, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is also known as the Cursed Child Arc and is placed after the Hidden Inventory Arc, before Season 1. The timeline is as follows:

You’ll notice I don’t list S2 Episodes 6 and 7, as they are recaps. In the worst-case scenario, you can watch these instead of 0 or even Season 1, but then you’d be deprived of the joy of watching this series.

You don’t necessarily have to watch the entire series in chronological order, and if you have the luxury to do so, watch it in the order by which it was released. This order is as follows:

Where Can You Read Wild Strawberry Chapter 4?

You can read Wild Strawberry Chapter 4 on the Manga Plus website for free. In addition, you can read the latest three chapters for free, which is excellent since the manga just released, giving you ample time to decide if you like it. However, don’t wait too long; otherwise, you must pay for a membership and use the Shueisha manga and comics app to read chapters beyond the first three.

Junji Ito is a name that commands reverence from horror and manga fans alike. His art style is disturbing, and detailed, conveying a potent contrast between the dull ordinary folks and those twisted by the mechanisms of their given story’s plot. Sometimes this can result in revolting, intensely detailed body horror visuals; other times, it manifests in deranged featured characters, teetering on the abyss. In the case of Soichi by Junji Ito (with a complimentary copy courtesy of VIZ Media), we’re introduced to the darkly comedic antics of the horrible titular child in my review.

A Happy Horror Vacation

Junji Ito has produced a lot of work featuring twisted visuals and/or mutilated bodies, but Soichi primarily focuses on Soichi Tsuji, one of his most iconic characters featured in this review. The imagery in these stories is decidedly tamer than other works such as Whispering Woman or Uzumaki, resulting in a happy horror vacation from the usual stomach-churning visuals. Instead, we’re treated to a series of short stories characterizing a young boy whose antics and quirks do the work to make your skin crawl.

Soichi is an unrepentant, self-centered, and spoiled child but with a twist: he has a knack for the occult and a penchant for sucking on nails. His reputation for the latter precedes him to the point of it being a way to address an iron deficiency, but when confronted about it, he misdirects them and claims he needs to suck human blood for that, instead.

When anybody crosses Soichi, no matter how petty the offense, he will curse them, although with the occasional backfire. If not for the ironic twists where his schemes fail, he’d seemingly be content with traumatizing or outright killing people. But it never quite goes that far here.

Soichi’s Many Petty Curses

Soichi’s stock and trade are in curses, often using Japanese occult techniques making him the worst Onmyōji candidate ever. Did you correct his spelling? That’s a curse. You suspect (correctly) that he’s replacing your faculty with full-sized cloth doll replicas that shoot nails? You better believe that’s a curse too. He’s perfectly content with causing you to hallucinate a giant spider trapping you, helplessly, and he’s quite good at it, too.

The Shoichi collection features 10 short stories that showcase his twisted priorities and intense self-centeredness. Characters around him including his siblings often resent how much he gets away with what he does, but the way Soichi sees it, people still get in his way. Any time his schemes are interfered with or thwarted, it’s an affront to what he believes to be ordained, and they must be humiliated in turn. His selfish desires even result in manipulating his family to dangerous extremes, resulting in the most compelling, disturbing story in the entire collection:

Coffin: A Horrifying Showcase of Soichi’s Worst Qualities (Spoilers Ahead)

Along with Soichi’s many projects where he curses others and hammers dolls to trees in the woods, he also has admittedly silly lifelong desires. One such desire is for a coffin like the ones where vampires slept, something he admired while watching foreign films. Soichi’s grandfather was able to build coffins and heard Soichi out on this dream, and was happy to make one for him in a strangely macabre-yet-wholesome moment. Grandpa was just trying to make his grandson happy.

But a combined disjointed narrative and continuous dark turns make this story a more twisted affair than the others in this collection. The story starts with them mourning said grandfather’s loss and Soichi being uncharacteristically devastated. But this is deceptive: Soichi was manipulative and laughed at his grandfather’s constant failures to make the right coffin, and when he ultimately passed away, Soichi saw this as a loss of his chance to get his dream coffin. But what he does next is more impressive and horrible than any other curse of his.

He brings him back to life, specifically to keep building coffins. It’s here you see a dramatic shift in how the grandfather is drawn to render an eerie undead visage and the mood shifts. People are shocked to see him. He is seemingly impossible to cremate and even shows up at his funeral, stuck in a loop of rising from his resting place to build coffins for Soichi until he gets it right.

But Soichi is never satisfied. It’s despicable and perfectly on-brand with his level of selfishness and a great showpiece for the book.

Curses and Occult Horror Make the Ordinary Seem Dull

One of the great strengths of this collection by Junji Ito is in how it renders ordinary characters. They’re too ordinary, and boring, even, without any discernible features to help them stand out, and that’s the point. It’s when these characters are either pushed up to the abyss or swapped out with Soichi’s creepy doll clones, that we see them twisted beyond belief and Ito’s greatest strengths.

It’s especially nice seeing them in black-and-white, seeing the shading and line weight add depth and personality to these characters. Soichi has beady little eyes, and messy hair, and is drawn to behave in a way that makes you go “What if Gollum was a childish schoolboy who knew a bit too much about black magic?” But it’s not just Soichi, as you see this with people he interacts with over a prolonged period, such as teachers, and even other Ito-verse characters like Tagaisu in Four-Layered Room. The eerie potential of Ito’s characters is immediate and clear, especially in late cases like Rumors.

The Verdict

Soichi, upon review, is an excellent showcase of Junji Ito short stories that flesh out the titular main character and is a potent reminder that excessive gore is not the only horror form out there. You can be repulsed by a character’s personality and actions just as much as you can by a 2-page body horror spread. It also doesn’t hurt that the physical copy is a beautiful hardcover featuring Ito’s artwork that’d make a fine addition to any horror fan’s collection.

But it’s also an excellent showcase of purposeful visual detail and strong writing. It’s a great way to introduce newcomers to the Ito-verse, and especially at the end, it can promise even more intense thrills and chills in his other collections. Having just gotten back from a Junji Ito exhibit showcasing the broad, macabre variety of his work, and even meeting him in person at that event, this is the tip of the iceberg, and there’s plenty more to enjoy from his brilliant mind.

They are strong but dimwitted, which will definitely be used to create many hilarious jokes.

After Spider-Verse, many animated movies have drawn inspiration from its unique animation style and fluidity, like the new Puss in Boots. Mutant Mayhem seems inspired by Spider-Verse while having its style, which is a sketchbook style that mimics a teenager’s comic book drawings. It’s edgy 90’s aesthetic is captivating and will hit you like a truck due to bringing back the TMNT nostalgia we grew up with as kids. Animated movies keep improving, and the TMNT movie is another step in the right direction. We’re in for a treat.

Edens Zero Chapter 249 Recap

The masked woman attacks Rebecca right off the bat. She doesn’t speak the entire chapter, making growling, gurgling noises and moving like an animal. Her “braids” move like tentacles and lash at Rebecca and her time-frozen friends. Rebecca is forced out of the bath and into the cold.

She tries to OD but is so cold that she can’t use her power. The woman knocks Rebecca into the boys’ bath, making her embarrassed about her and Shiki being naked together. This reminds her of her earlier discovery about her Ether being stimulated when naked. She also remembers that moving through time in U0 should be impossible for her, so she thinks the time-freezing must be the woman’s power. Rebecca sees the word “Joker” written on the woman’s collar, confirming her to be Joker Helix.

Rebecca throws on a bath towel and runs inside to find somewhere warm. Joker knocks her through the floor into a chamber of gears, where time begins to move again (confirmed by the gears turning). Now warm, Rebecca turns the tables on Joker, using her legs and the machinery to dominate her. She caps off by entering OD and knocking Joker down with a new move, Bellholy Needle.

Joker stumbles back to her feet, still not beaten, but is shot through the back of the head by a man in the shadows, who reveals her to be an avatar controlled by the real Joker. Rebecca’s rescuer is Prof. Weisz, who has both his real arms and greets her with a smile, saying, “It’s been a while, Rebecca.”

The focus then shifts to Isagi’s lengthy monologue expressing his frustration that, although his attack pattern was flawless, it failed due to a slight miscommunication. Nevertheless, Isagi refused to blame Yukimiya Kenyu, believing that if he were a skilled striker, he would have been able to score from the pass he received.

As Ubers launched their attack, Isagi quickly switched to defense to prevent them from scoring. However, Ubers had the upper hand, with more players advancing towards the front, making it difficult for Gagamaru to anticipate where Barou’s shot might come from, leaving him confused.

On the other hand, Isagi does not have a specific position and tends to switch and attempt to do everything constantly. I do not think the other characters in Uber should follow this approach. Snuffy is an excellent coach, while Barou prefers to be a leader rather than play under someone else.
